Video Conferencing Devices for Beginners

To know video conferencing well one should have knowledge about working along with hardware and software used for the purpose. Video conferencing also referred to as video teleconference or VTC includes digital compression of video and audio signals in real time. The devices and software used are called codec. Data is sent in digital format in the form of what is known as packets. The packets are transferred through digital computer network like IP or ISDN network.

Video conferencing equipment includes a video input, i.e. video camera or webcam. The output is either a television or computer monitor. Audio input is microphone and audio output is loudspeaker.

The arrangement of video conferencing devices in video conferencing room depends on the user who is going to utilize it for the purpose it is serving. There are three kinds of set ups for online video conferencing system- they are room systems, roll-about units and desktop systems.

Room systems depend largely on the purpose it is serving, whether arrangement is for training, interview, debate, meeting or conferences. Room systems are built keeping online video conferencing in mind. They generally consist of high quality camera and many computer monitor. The high quality cameras referred to as PTZ can be placed in different directions.

One of the most common devices is roll about unit, which is best suited for small conferences and meetings. The roll-about unit consists of one or two computers with monitors, camera, codec and other essentials.

Desktop systems are the personal computers used for online video conferencing. All that is required is camera or webcam, microphone, software and boards attached to the computer which makes video conferencing possible.
